Early Childhood & Education: 10 Books Every Child Must Read

Almost all parents want their child to cultivate the habit of reading. But how do you get them interested in something which gives off a boring vibe?


You make sure that they read the best of the best books that are recommended for children their age. A survey conducted by Sainsbury’s to celebrate World Book Day in 2015, released a list of 50 books that every child should read before they turn 16. Here are a few books which we think can help kickstart your child’s reading habit and push him/her forward towards finishing all the 50 books:


1. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland- Lewis Carroll

Alice in wonderland is a beautiful story that dwells in a nonsensical world of fantasy. Alice, a little girl falls into a rabbit hole and finds herself lost in a completely different world, a world of fantasy. It instils curiosity in her mind and she begins to explore that world meeting fascinating characters like a rabbit with a pocket watch and a mad hatter.


2. Charlie and The Chocolate Factory- Roald Dahl

This is one of the most famous books written by Roald Dahl. The inspiration for this story comes from his prior experiences as a child going to chocolate factories. In this story, Wonka the owner of the Wonka chocolate factory holds a contest sort of thing and the winner of which will get to visit him in his factory. Charlie Bucket, a boy living in poverty is the last person to win this competition but does he know how winning this small competition is going to change his life?


3. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe- CS Lewis

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is one of the seven books in the Chronicles of Narnia and also the best known of the lot. Most of the book is set in Narnia, a magical land where a witch has been ruling for a 100 years of winter. The wardrobe acts like a passageway to this magical land. The lion, Aslan is the protector of Narnians and he protects, the four children that tumble into the magical land of Narnia from the evil White Witch.


4. Treasure Island- Robert Louis Stevenson

The story is about how young Jim Hawkins and his mother find a map which leads to a Treasure Island. How they find the map? Who their companions are? Do they eventually find the treasure chest? Or is it just a myth?


5. A Bear Called Paddington- Michael Bond

A Bear Called Paddington is the first book in which the amiable bear, Paddington is introduced. The entire story is about how they find him and how this well-mannered and lovable bear changes the life of the Brown family. Michael Bond has done a great job in creating a character like Paddington Brown who teaches children a lot of good things.


6. Matilda- Roald Dahl

The story Matilda is about a young girl named Matilda itself. She is extremely intelligent and gutsy but is never treated well by her mother and father. As a result she befriends one of the teacher’s in her school. The story is about their relationship and how the teacher helps Matilda live a better life and tap into her great potential.


7. Oliver Twist- Charles Dickens

Oliver Twist was the second novel written by Charles Dickens. The story is about the young boy named Oliver Twist. He is an orphan who is mistreated for a major part of the story. There is nothing constant in his life as his environment keeps on shifting from one place to another, involuntarily most of the time. However, the end of the story reveals alot more than one would imagine it to making it an interesting read.


8. Charlotte’s Wed- EB White

It is a story about how a spider named Charlotte devises a plan to save one of the farm animals, Wilbur the pig from an early death. Her ideas may seem unconventional because of which many animals question it’s success. So is she as clever as she seems to be or does Wilbur die anyways?


9. The Cat in the Hat- Dr. Seuss

This wonderful story is about how the Cat in the Hat convertsa boring evening for a brother and sister into something memorable. With a number of tricks and games, he makes them laugh. However, at the end of all the house is left as a big mess and the disheartened Cat leaves before the children’s mother returned home to see the mess created. But do you think he leaves just like that?


10. The Jungle Book- Rudyard Kipling

Arguably one of the most popular book among children, The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling is a masterpiece. It is the characters like Mowgli, Bagheera, Balloo and Shere Khan which make it a timeless classic that can be read again and again. The entire story revolves around how Mowgli, a jungle boy raised by wolves has to face the perils of the forest with his friends Bagheera,Balloo by his side fighting against Shere Khan, the man eating tiger.
