Hairfall In Kids: Cause and Remedy

When adults lose hair, it is a matter of concern but when the child lose hair, we often ignore. Have you ever wondered what if your child loses hair continuously and become bald? In that case, it won’t just affect parents and make them feel concerned but also it affects the self-confidence of the child. They may even get bullied in their friend circle. So, here is everything you need to know about hair fall in kids and the remedies for hair loss.

Causes of Hair loss:
Non-medical causes of Hairfall
Newborn hair loss:

Newborns usually lose their hair to be replaced by the permanent hair. This usually happens in the first few months of life.

Rubbing:

It is pretty normal for your baby to have a bald spot between 3 to 6 months. This occurs due to friction with the crib mattress or car seat and lost hair should return once your baby starts to sit up.

Hair abuse:

Treating your kid’s hair harshly, brushing vigorously, pulling hair into tight ponytails or braids can result in hair fall.

Medical causes:
Tinea capitis:

It is a fungal infection and commonly known as the ringworm of the scalp. This usually shows up in the form of scaly patches of hair loss on the head. This infection causes the hair to be broken off at the surface of the skin. It appears like black dots on the scalp.

Alopecia areata:

It is a non-contagious form of hair loss caused due to the attack of body’s immune system to the hair follicles. It forms sudden round and oval patches of hair loss. Unlike Tinea capitis, these patches are smooth and without broken hairs. This condition could progress to either Alopecia totalis (loss of all the hair on the scalp) or Alopecia universalis (loss of all the body hair).

Trichotillomania:

This condition is the result of pulling, plucking, twisting or rubbing of hair by the child. The hair loss will be patchy and characterized by broken hair of varying length. Stressor or anxiety is the main triggers of this condition.

Telogen effluvium:

A sudden or severe stress such as the death of loved one, surgery, high fever, use of prescription medication interrupts normal hair growth cycle leading the hair follicles to enter telogen phase, a resting phase. Between 6 to 16 weeks, the hair shed excessively and leads to partial or complete baldness. However, once the stressful period is over, the hair will return within a year.

Nutrition deficiency:

Lack of nutrients such as Vitamin H or biotin, Zinc or too much of Vitamin A could lead to hair loss.

Endocrine problem:

Another cause of hair fall could be hypothyroidism in which the thyroid is underactive and not producing sufficient thyroid hormones which are required for regulating metabolism.

Remedies for Hair fall:
Oils:

Different types of oils such as coconut oil, olive oil, jojoba help in hair growth. Each oil has specific effect in growing back the hair. For example, coconut oil reduces the dandruff and Leanne the hair. Olive oil helps in making hair stronger and prevents hair fall.

Healthy diet:

Most of the conditions could be kept in check if your kid follows a healthy diet. Ideally, to reduce the hair fall, a healthy diet consists of lots of protein, organic vegetables and fruits. And the vitamins that are required to control hair loss are vitamin A, C, E, zinc and iron.

Taking care of hair:

Being tender and taking care while bathing, drying, brushing and combing your kid’s hair and also avoiding tight hair bands and items could prevent hair damage and breakage.

Apple cider vinegar:

It re-establishes the state of alkaline in the body and helps in regenerating ideal health levels in your kid’s entire body.

Biotin:

Biotin is a kind of vitamin b complex which provides nutrients for hair, skin and nail development. Using biotin as a daily supplement regenerates the lost hair and re-establishes the present nutrients.
