What causes swollen tonsils and why it has to be removed?

Swollen tonsils = Tonsillitis = inflammation of tonsils, mainly by infection Cause - Bacterial/Viral, Unhygeinic food/water, poor personal hygeine Commonly associated with respiratory tract infection - difficulty /pain during swallowing, cough, cold, running nose, intermittant(on n off) fever, excessive cry(in babies). 2 Types 1. Acute tonsillitis Cause - virus/bacteria Presents with above symptoms Treatment - 1 full course of antibiotics, anti inflammatory, antipyretics. Home therapy - GARGLING with luke warm water for 3mins, thrice a day till symptoms subside 2. Chronic tonsillitis ( Recurrent acute tonsillitis) Cause - mainly bacterial Presents with above symptoms in repeated episodes inspite of proper treatment. Treatment - Same as above + Tonsillectomy ( only if necessary) "ALL SWOLLEN TONSILS NEED NOT BE REMOVED!" Criteria for tonsillectomy/tonsil removal: Tonsillectomy is indicated only for individuals who have experienced more than 6 episodes of tonsillitis in 1 year, 5 episodes in 2 consecutive years, or 3 or more infections per year for 3 years in a row despite adequate medical therapy, or recurrent tonsillitis which is severy affecting childs routine Prevention: Maintaining good personal(proper hand washing)/food/water hygeine.
